Medical Policy
At Your Wellness Link, our clinicians are licensed nurse practitioners who provide telemedicine care to patients across Florida. We are committed to delivering high-quality primary care via telemedicine, ensuring accessibility and affordability while maintaining the highest standards of responsible medicine. Our goal is to make healthcare services accessible to as many people as possible while safeguarding patient health and safety.
In accordance with Florida law and regulations governing nurse practitioner-led telemedicine services, we adhere to the following guidelines in determining when it is appropriate to provide telemedicine services and when in-person care is necessary. We prioritize patient health and safety, conducting a thorough evaluation of each patient’s condition.
Conditions We Treat via Telemedicine
Your Wellness Link nurse practitioners are capable of safely and remotely treating a wide range of conditions, including common acute and chronic health issues. However, there are instances when in-person care is necessary. We will work with patients to manage many conditions remotely, as long as it is medically appropriate. Services provided include consultations, medication and prescription refills, sick visits, medical guidance, and diagnosis explanations.
Conditions Requiring In-Person Care
In some instances, remote treatment may not be appropriate due to the complexity of the condition, the need for physical examination, specialized tests, or in-person procedures. In these cases, the patient will be responsible for establishing care with an in person primary care provider or specialist as necessary. These include, but are not limited to:
- Ear infections or strep throat
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting)
- Lab tests or imaging studies
- Mental health concerns due to need for specialty care
- Urinary symptoms in males due to need for further testing
- Controlled substance prescriptions or in-person specialist consultations
- Type I diabetes (insulin-dependent) due to need for consistent in-person blood work/monitoring
- Conditions requiring immunosuppressive therapy
- Patients actively undergoing cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiotherapy)
- Immunosuppression (e.g., HIV, organ transplants)
- Oxygen-dependent patients
- Organ failure (e.g., heart, liver, kidney failure)
- Patients who are hospitalized or in hospice care
- Conditions requiring injectable medications
- Follow-up visits after an emergency or surgery
- Animal bites or injuries (including venomous bites)
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (may require injectable medications)
Exclusions Based on Age, Location, or Condition:
- Patients under 18 years of age
- Patients outside of Florida at the time of the visit
- Specialist referrals required
- Pregnancy-related conditions
- Patients with cancer treatment, autoimmune diseases, immunosuppressants, or AIDS
- Patients in hospice care, with organ transplants, oxygen dependence, or organ failure (liver, kidney, heart)
- Other conditions requiring ongoing monitoring or specialist care
Exclusions for Specific Situations:
- Workers’ compensation cases, car accidents, injury claims/litigation, slip and fall injuries, or immunizations
For your safety, we are unable to prescribe the following medications:
We comply with Florida law, and as such, we do not prescribe or refill:
- Controlled substances (e.g., Xanax, Ambien, ADHD medications, opioid pain medications, weight loss medications, or nerve pain medications)
- Medications requiring regular monitoring through blood work (e.g., lithium, warfarin)
- Immunosuppressive medications (e.g., methotrexate)
- Injectable medications (certain types)
- COVID-related antivirals (e.g., Paxlovid)
- Pregnancy-related prescriptions
Emergency Situations
If you experience any of the following emergency symptoms including chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, severe pain, neurological symptoms (e.g., dizziness, fainting, headaches), palpitations, stroke symptoms, or other emergent conditions, we strongly encourage you to call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
These conditions cannot be treated via telemedicine, and we cannot substitute an emergency department visit.
Conditions Requiring In-Person Testing or Care
For certain conditions, we may treat remotely but require follow-up testing or an in-person healthcare provider for further management. These include:
- Vaginal yeast infections
- Female urinary symptoms
Refill Prescribing Criteria
At Your Wellness Link, we will consider prescribing medications that you are currently taking, provided it is safe and medically appropriate to do so. Patients should expect a thorough review prior to any prescription being issued. Nurse practitioners can prescribe medications for many conditions, but only under specific criteria and in compliance with Florida law. For prescriptions, the following steps are required:
- A valid assessment of your current health status
- Review of current medications to avoid contraindications
- Consideration of potential drug interactions
Our Role in Your Care
While Your Wellness Link provides accessible care, we are not a replacement for your primary care provider. We aim to bridge the gap and offer timely consultations, treatments, and prescriptions, helping you establish ongoing care.
Privacy and Security of Patient Information
At Your Wellness Link, we prioritize the confidentiality and security of your health information. Our Telemedicine platform, powered by Advanced MD, is HIPAA-compliant, ensuring that all patient data is protected in accordance with federal privacy regulations. This means your personal health information is securely transmitted, stored, and managed to maintain the highest standards of privacy and security.
